چکیده
In this thesis we discuss the general spatial structure of quantum entanglement in local many-body systems. A central theme is the organizing power of the renormalization group for thinking about many-body entanglement. We argue that the coarse structure of entanglement across of wide variety of systems, from gapped topological phases to gapless Fermi liquids in a variety of dimensions, can all be understood within a unified framework. We discuss tensor network states inspired by entanglement considerations, probe the limits of the boundary law for entanglement entropy, speculate about connections between entanglement renormalization and holography, and develop the formalism of mutual information in quantum field theory. We proceed from general considerations about entanglement in lattice models of many-body physics to specific attempts to isolate the low energy structure of entanglement in quantum field theories. We conclude by describing some major open questions in the subject of many-body entanglement that we find particularly interesting. Thesis Supervisor: Xiao-Gang Wen Title: Professor of Physics

Evaluation of Seismic Response of Concrete Structures Reinforced by Shape Memory Alloys (Technical Note)
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are unique smart materials that have many advantages, such as ability to resist large strains without leaving residual strains and ability to recover original form. However, the high costs of SMAs have limited their usage. This paper evaluates the behavior of concrete structures equipped with SMAs in an optimal manner as they are being used along the plastic hinge of ...
متن کاملSeismic Damage Assessment of RC Buildings Subjected to the Rotational Ground Motion Records Considering Soil-Structure Interaction
The significance of the seismic rotational components have been overlooked in the seismic evaluation of structural behavior. As researchers have measured seismic components more accurately using sensitive rotational velocity sensor, it was observed that the magnitude of rotational components is considerable and could not be neglected. Hence, some parts of seismic damage or failure of structures...
متن کاملQuantum Entanglement in Many-body Systems
This article is intended to be a pedagogical review of the recent studies of quantum entanglement in many-body systems. The basic concepts of entanglement for pure and mixed states are introduced in an intuitive approach. We will see that in the weakly interacting BEC and BCS superconductivity theories, the pair of particles with momentum k and −k are entangled but they are not correlated with ...
متن کاملEntanglement in Many-Body Systems
The recent interest in aspects common to quantum information and condensed matter has prompted a flory of activity at the border of these disciplines that were far distant untill few years ago. Numerous interesting questions have been addressed so far. Here we review an important part of this field, the properties of the entanglement in many-body systems. We discuss the zero and finite temperat...
متن کاملEntanglement versus energy in quantum spin models
We study entanglement properties of all eigenstates of the Heisenberg XXX model, and find that the entanglement and mixedness for a pair of nearest-neighbor qubits are completely determined by the corresponding eigenenergies. Specifically, the negativity of the eigenenergy implies pairwise entanglement. From the relation between entanglement and eigenenergy, we obtain finite-size behaviors of t...
